Children across Carmarthenshire are to enjoy their school dinners even more thanks to an agreement between the county council and Frank's Ice Cream.

The award-winning Capel Hendre firm has signed a contract with the council to provide ice cream for the county's schools. The deal forms part of the council's local food strategy. More than 22,000 school meals are prepared in Carmarthenshire every day and the strategy aims to ensure more local produce is used. The county council already has a contract with Brakes for the supply of frozen foods. The ice cream will be served with fresh fruit at Carmarthenshire primary schools next week. A family company has scooped the special award for the very best example of the nation's favourite flavour. It was a prize-giving organised across the entire UK by the Ice Cream Alliance, the industry's trade association, and it had more than 500 companies competing.

The 80-year-old family business has been churning out the delicious treat for three generations and reckons that "ice cream is in their blood". And the judges certainly agreed with stiff competition for the best vanilla ice cream all across Britain. Western Mail article
